Top Contact vs. Bottom Contact FPC Connectors: Pinouts, Stiffeners, and Orientation

Top contact and bottom contact FPC connectors dictate which side of the housing cavity contains the active conductive spring beams relative to the PCB surface. Choosing between top, bottom, or dual-contact configurations determines the exposed copper pad orientation required on the flexible circuit tail to establish electrical continuity.

Structural Contact Orientation

In a Top Contact connector, the single row of internal spring terminals is arranged along the upper roof of the connector cavity facing downward. The FPC tail must be inserted with its exposed gold contact pads facing upward toward the top roof. In a Bottom Contact connector, the active spring terminals lie along the lower floor of the cavity, requiring the FPC pads to face downward toward the PCB motherboard surface.

PCB Routing and Cable Inversion Considerations

Flex Cable Layer Stackup: Selecting the contact orientation dictates the side on which stiffener plates (e.g., Polyimide or FR4) must be laminated relative to the conductive copper layer.

Cable Flipping Risks: Mismatches between connector contact direction and FPC pad facing force 180° axial twisting of the flex cable, introducing mechanical stress and impedance mismatches in high-speed traces.

Dual-Contact Alternatives: Dual-contact connectors integrate spring beams on both the top and bottom interior walls, allowing identical signal pinouts regardless of FPC insertion orientation.

Use Bottom Contact connectors when the FPC origin point naturally presents exposed trace pads facing downward to avoid twisting the cable. Use Top Contact connectors when the mating circuit component or display module outputs flexible traces with upward-facing pads. When manufacturing routing flexibility or inventory consolidation across inverted assemblies is paramount, specify Dual Contact connectors.
