The Migration from Legacy Fieldbuses to Zonal Ethernet
As automotive platforms and industrial automation systems evolve, legacy communications networks like CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, and RS-485 face bandwidth bottlenecks. Modern vehicles and smart factories require real-time, high-bandwidth data transmission to support distributed computing, perception sensors, and edge AI processing.
Historically, commercial Ethernet (100BASE-TX or 1000BASE-T) required two or four twisted copper pairs. In automotive and aerospace applications, multi-pair cabling adds unacceptable weight, bulk, and complexity to wiring harnesses. Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) overcomes this limitation by transmitting full-duplex data over a single twisted pair of copper wires, establishing a unified protocol stack from cloud servers down to edge sensors.
SPE Standards: 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1, and Beyond
Automotive Ethernet standards defined by the IEEE 802.3 working group tailor Ethernet performance to physical harness constraints:
- 100BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bw): Provides 100 Mbps full-duplex bandwidth over a single unshielded twisted pair (UTP) up to 15 meters. Operating with PAM3 modulation at a 66.7 MHz symbol rate, it serves as the baseline network for radar modules, gateway nodes, and audio endpoints.
- 1000BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bp): Delivers 1 Gbps throughput over a single shielded (STP) or unshielded pair, operating at a 750 MHz symbol rate. It handles high-resolution video streams from ADAS cameras and central zonal controllers.
- Multi-Gig Automotive Ethernet (IEEE 802.3ch): Extends SPE throughput to 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps over single shielded twisted pair cables, targeting LiDAR perception clusters and central AI domain computers.
Connector Standardization: IEC 63171-6 vs. IEC 63171-7
Beyond automotive applications, industrial SPE adoption relies on standardized connector interfaces defined under the IEC 63171 umbrella:
- IEC 63171-6 (Industrial SPE): Designed for harsh industrial environments, featuring IP67 M8 and M12 locking interfaces alongside compact IP20 snap-in connectors for cabinet wiring. It provides reliable 1 Gbps data delivery alongside Power over Data Line (PoDL).
- IEC 63171-7 (Hybrid SPE + Power): Integrates Single Pair Ethernet data lines with dedicated heavy-gauge power conductors inside an M12 shell, delivering up to 11 kW of power to industrial drives and actuators while maintaining real-time Ethernet connectivity.
Harness Mass Reduction and PoDL Integration
The primary mechanical driver for Single Pair Ethernet is wiring harness optimization. Replacing traditional four-pair Cat 5e cable with a single twisted pair reduces cable weight by up to 80% and outer cable diameter by over 50%. In battery electric vehicles (EVs), this weight reduction directly extends driving range.
Furthermore, SPE supports Power over Data Line (PoDL), defined in IEEE 802.3bu/cg. Similar to Power over Ethernet (PoE), PoDL supplies up to 52 W of DC power directly over the single data pair to remote camera modules and sensors, eliminating the need for dedicated power wiring.
By standardizing on Single Pair Ethernet and robust IEC interfaces, hardware engineers simplify wiring architecture, cut harness mass, and achieve seamless end-to-end IP networking across automotive and industrial systems.
