What Is a Box Build?
A box build (also called an integrated electromechanical assembly) goes beyond a standalone wire harness or cable assembly by combining wiring, connectors, control components, and enclosures into a single delivered unit. Rather than shipping a harness for a customer to install into their own control cabinet, the manufacturer builds and tests the complete enclosed assembly — wiring, terminal blocks, switches, relays, and protective housing all integrated as one product.
Why Specify a Full Box Build Instead of a Standalone Harness
Reduced Final Assembly Burden
When a manufacturer delivers a fully wired and tested enclosure rather than loose harness components, the customer's own assembly line avoids the labor and quality-control burden of final wiring and enclosure integration.
Optimal Environmental Protection
Enclosing controls and connections inside a purpose-built housing protects sensitive wiring and components from dust, moisture, vibration, and accidental contact — particularly valuable in industrial floor environments or outdoor installations where a bare harness would be vulnerable.
Single-Source Quality Accountability
With the entire electromechanical assembly built and tested by one manufacturer, there is a single point of accountability for both the wiring quality and the mechanical enclosure integrity, rather than splitting responsibility between a harness supplier and a separate enclosure integrator.
Certification Considerations
Box builds destined for industrial control applications commonly require UL 508 (industrial control equipment) or UL 764 (office appliance and business equipment) certification, since the enclosure and its internal wiring are evaluated as a complete system rather than as individual components. Confirming which certification your end application requires early in the design process avoids costly rework later.
When Full Integration Makes Sense
A full box build is worth specifying when the end product needs a self-contained, field-ready enclosure — control panels, protective housings for sensitive electronics, or subsystems that will be installed by technicians without deep wiring expertise. For applications where your own team will integrate the harness into a larger, already-designed enclosure, a standalone cable harness or assembly is typically the more economical choice.
